Arsenal may have started compiling a list of the players they will be targeting this summer, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Gunners are currently intending to sign Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand at the end of the season. Southampton announced earlier this week that the former England international defender will be leaving the Saints when this season comes to an end and Arsenal are currently emerging as his likely destination.
It is no longer secret that the Emirates club will be desperate to make some additions to the squad as well as allowing some players to leave this summer, making it even more believable that Bertrand could be playing at the London club from the beginning of next season.
The defender was in negotiations with the Saints over a new contract as his current deal is set to expire at the end of this season but talks about a contract extension broke down as both parties failed to reach an agreement.
Chelsea were said to be keen to sign the defender last season as a potential replacement for Marcos Alonso who was linked with an exit to the Spanish La Liga. However, Alonso stayed put at Stamford Bridge and the Blues discontinued their interest in the Southampton man.
It is believed that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta wants to provide cover for Kieran Tierney who has been in great form for the Gunners this season and he has identified Bertrand as the ideal candidate to serve as a backup option to the excellent young defender.
Bertrand will remain at Southampton and continue playing for the Saints until at least the end of this season but is certain to leave the St Mary’s once his contract runs out at the men’s of this current campaign. With his experience, he could be a top signing for Arteta’s men.
